TAKE THE PLEDGE

A poem by
Autumn Rose Alexnder

You’ve never seen my face before
You don’t even know my name
But when first you look upon me,
You judge me just the same.

Perhaps you are a stranger
Shopping in a grocery store.
You see my bruises, cast down eyes,
And hurry out the door.

Or maybe you’re my neighbor
You often hear him yell,
How many times you’ve heard me crying,
That I cannot tell.

Day to day you live your life,
Like you do not hear or see,
The harshness and abusiveness
My husband gives to me.

Domestic violence occurs in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) relationships as often as in straight (or heterosexual) relationships. While many of the dynamics of battering of LGBT partners are the same as in straight relationships, there are also some differences.
It is important for survivors of LGBT battering to be aware of the specific dynamics of domestic violence in LGBT relationships so that they can better plan for their safety.  It is equally important for domestic violence programs to understand LGBT culture and how LGBT people are affected by battering so that more effective services can be provided.
