What are some warning signs?- Your friend or family member has become isolated or appears to be avoiding you
- Your family member or friend expresses fear or concern
- Your family member or friend wears unusual or unseasonal clothes (long sleeves in high temperatures)
- Your family member or friend appears different than they normally are. Perhaps they appear depressed, quiet, body language has changed
- Your family or friend makes plans that are never fulfilled
- Your family or friend always has to get approval from their partner
- Unexplaned or frequent hospital visits or injuries
Why people stay with their abusers?Economic dependence Fear of retribution Fear of emotional damage to children Fear of losing custody of children Nowhere to go No job skills Fear of social isolation from family or friends Fear of court processes Cultural or religious conflicts Fear of loneliness Insecurity about the future Guilt about failure of marriage Fear that abuser cannot survive alone Belief that abuser will change Fear of making major life changes

- Be patient and aware thatt they may be afraid for their safety
- Help set up a safety plan
- Be there for when (if) they are ready to make a change.
